Go for fold-flat and a built-in iron rest

For a wall-mounted ironing board that actually stays out of the way, prioritize a fold-flat design and a built-in iron rest.

The fold-flat part is obvious but easy to miss. Some wall boards stick out a few inches even when closed. That’s permanent clutter. You want the board to sit completely flush against the wall, ideally with a cover that hides the mechanism. The Brabantia or similar models get this right — they lock into the wall cavity and vanish.

The built-in iron rest is the real game changer. Without it, you’ll need a separate iron holder that adds its own clutter, or you’ll awkwardly prop the iron on the board itself and risk burning something. A dedicated rest that folds with the board means the iron has a home, and you’re not hunting for storage.

Other things: the cover should be removable and padded (the cheap felt ones wear out fast), and the board height should be adjustable if possible. But those are nice-to-haves. The first two are must-haves.
