Go wide and shallow, not tall.
The best lunch box for hearty grain or pasta salad is a wide, shallow container that lets the salad sit in a single layer instead of piling up.
Deep containers are the enemy here. Pile a quinoa salad three inches high and the bottom grains get squished into paste, no matter how careful you are. A wide, flat base spreads the weight out so nothing crushes anything else. Think meal-prep containers, not soup mugs.
You want something with a rigid wall and a lid that actually latches. The Rubbermaid Brilliance line is solid — clear, plastic, but sturdy enough to take some abuse in a bag without flexing. If you don’t mind the weight, glass snap-lock containers are even better against crushing. Just make sure the lid seals tightly so the dressing doesn’t turn everything into a soggy mess. And if the salad is dressed, keep the dressing on the side in a small jar until you’re ready to eat.
Stainless tiffins look nice but stack and can crush the bottom layer if you’re not careful. Skip those for this particular job.
One layer, one lock, no squish. That’s the whole trick.
