Go with 1.2 Liters for Most Adult Lunches

Most adults should buy a lunch box around 1.2 liters — it fits a real meal without forcing you to pack a cooler. Anything in the 1 to 1.5 liter range is fine; 1.2 is just the sweet spot.

Here’s the rough math. A normal adult meal is about 500ml to 1 liter of actual food. Your main dish (chicken, rice, veggies) runs 250–500ml, and one side takes up another 250ml at most. A 750ml box makes you pack tiny portions. A 2 liter box feels like a Tupperware tomb and encourages overpacking.

Go bigger if your lunch is mostly salad — greens are stupidly bulky, so a filling salad needs 1.5 liters easy. Go smaller if you’re doing soup or something light, where 800–900ml works.

One warning: capacity numbers are measured to the brim, and brands round up cheerfully. That “1.5L” box might realistically hold 1.2. If it matters, check the actual dimensions instead of trusting the label.

And whatever you buy, you’ll overpack the first week. That’s normal — your eyes are bigger than your lunch box.
