Golden hour is the answer for those rapids.

Yes, shoot during golden hour — roughly the first hour after sunrise or the last hour before sunset. That warm, angled light makes the greenish-blue water pop without washing it out.

Midday sun is terrible for this. The overhead light creates glare off the water, flattens the colors, and makes the rapids look pale or muddy. Golden hour gives you a sidelight that catches the texture of the water and enhances the cool tones. Shadows from the islands can actually help — they add depth and make the bright rapids stand out more.

If you have to shoot midday, use a polarizing filter to cut glare and saturate the blues. But honestly? Just go early. The morning light also means fewer people on the water.

Set your alarm. The color is worth it.
