Ground yourself before touching RAM.

Yes, you can damage RAM, but the risk is small if you follow two simple rules: touch the metal case of your computer before you touch the module, and handle it by the edges only.

Static electricity is the main enemy. A zap you can’t even feel can fry a RAM stick’s circuits. So just touch an unpainted metal part of your case (with the power supply switched off but plugged in) before you pull it out of the bag. That’s it. You don’t need a wrist strap for home use if you keep one hand on the case while working.

The other risk is bending the gold pins on the bottom. Don’t touch them. Hold the stick by the long sides. When installing, line it up with the slot notch and press evenly — don’t force it. If it doesn’t click in, you’re probably holding it wrong.

Modern RAM is pretty tough as long as you’re not rubbing it on carpet or throwing it across the room. Just be deliberate, and you’re fine.
