Half veg, quarter protein, quarter carbs
Packing a balanced bento is easy once you stop thinking about specific foods and just follow the ratio: half the box should be vegetables, a quarter protein, and a quarter carbs.
Most people overthink bento. You see the fancy Instagram boxes with octopus hot dogs and egg flowers and assume it’s complicated. It isn’t. Balance is about proportions, not decoration. The half/quarter/quarter rule gets you there every time, even if it’s just rice, leftover chicken, and some roasted broccoli.
Use silicone cups or foil liners to keep wet foods from sloshing into the dry stuff. It’s not for aesthetics—nobody wants rice that tastes like pickled radish juice. Make one of the vegetable components something pickled or fermented. A few slices of cucumber or a spoonful of kimchi adds flavor and makes the box feel intentional instead of sad.
Portion by the box, not by the plate. When you look down at it, picture the box divided into four sections. It’s that simple.
Your lunch doesn’t need to be beautiful—it just needs to be mostly plants, and it will be balanced.
