Hand-wash the lid, not just the box

If the lunch box lid has a silicone or rubber seal, skip the dishwasher for it — the heat can ruin the seal.

Dishwasher cycles get hot, and that heat can warp the plastic lid or dry out and compress the silicone gasket. Once that happens, the lid won’t seal right, and you’ll have leaking lunch containers on your commute. Even “top-rack safe” usually just means it won’t melt — it doesn’t promise the seal stays leakproof.

The inner tray is fine to put in the dishwasher if it’s plain plastic. Pop it on the top rack and you’re good. The main box can usually go in too, if the bottom says so.

But the lid? Hand-wash it with warm soapy water. Takes ten seconds and saves you from replacing the whole set in three months. If the seal is removable, you can wash it separately as well — still by hand, not by dishwasher. Future lunch-packing you deserves a seal that actually works.
