Hard mousepads: thinner feels crisper, thicker feels damped.
Thicker pads soften the impact of clicks and provide a bit more desk forgiveness, but not enough to matter for most people.
A 2mm hard pad sits almost directly on your desk. Clicks feel sharp, loud, and immediate because there’s almost nothing between the mouse and the solid surface. That can be satisfying for gaming or fast clicking, but it also means every desk imperfection transfers straight to your hand.
A 5mm pad adds a thin layer of foam or rubber. Clicks get slightly quieter and feel less percussive — like wrapping a drum head in a towel. The pad also absorbs small desk bumps or unevenness better. Stability is roughly the same for normal use; you won’t notice a 3mm height difference unless you’re smashing the mouse down hard. In that case, the thinner pad might feel more planted.
If you’re sensitive to sound or desk wobble, go thicker. If you want the rawest, most direct click feedback, go thin. Either way, the difference is subtle — not life-changing.
