Hard mousepads will eat your mouse feet faster.
Yes. Hard surfaces like plastic or aluminum are much more abrasive to PTFE mouse feet than cloth pads. The difference is significant enough that you’ll notice wear within a few months if you game or work a lot.
Cloth pads have a woven surface that lets the mouse glide with minimal friction against the feet themselves. Hard pads create a direct, hard contact point. Even the smoothest aluminum pad is still a rigid surface that gradually grinds down soft PTFE. Some hard pads are coated or have a finer texture (like certain ceramic or glass pads), but they still cause more wear than cloth, full stop.
If you like the speed and consistency of a hard pad, plan on replacing mouse feet every six months or so. Some mice have easily replaceable feet; others are a pain. Buy spares ahead of time.
You can mitigate wear with thicker, higher-quality PTFE feet, but you can’t stop physics.
