Hard plastic beats fabric for allergy kids

For a kid with severe food allergies, a hard plastic or silicone lunch box you can run through the dishwasher is the safest choice.

Fabric and insulated lunch bags are the problem. They’re porous, they hold onto crumbs and oils, and you can’t really sanitize them. One leftover peanut smear on the inside lining is all it takes. Look for something with separate compartments or just pack individual hard containers inside. Compartments keep an allergen food from touching the safe stuff, but the real protection is the box itself being non-porous and fully washable. Avoid anything with cloth liners, mesh pockets, or seams that trap crumbs.

Also: write the child’s name and allergen on the box in permanent marker. It helps the school staff keep it straight, and it reminds everyone at the table that this box is not for sharing.

Boring wins here. The safest lunch box looks like a Tupperware box, and that’s exactly what you want.
