Hard-sided coolers win for long beach days.

If you’re planning to stay on the sand for more than a few hours, get a hard-sided cooler. The difference is mostly about ice retention vs. portability.

Hard-sided coolers (like Yeti, Coleman, Igloo) have thick insulation and a sealed lid. They keep ice frozen for 12–24 hours easy. That matters when the sun is pounding and you want cold drinks at 4pm. Downside: they’re heavy, awkward to carry across soft sand, and take up a lot of space.

Soft-sided coolers (backpack style or tote) are lighter, easier to carry, and fine for a quick afternoon. But they leak cold fast. In direct sun, ice can be gone in 3–4 hours. They also crush easier if you sit on them.

For a real beach day—lunch, beach chairs, towels, kids—hard-sided is the move. For a quick dip with a sandwich, soft is fine.

Don’t overthink it: bring the hard cooler if you care about still having a cold beer at sunset.
