Heavy mousepads stay put better
Yes, a heavy mousepad won’t slide around.
The weight helps, but it’s really the rubber base that does the work. A thin lightweight pad — especially one without a textured bottom — will creep across the desk if you flick your mouse hard. A thick rubber base (3-5mm) grips the surface and stays planted.
Desk material matters too. A heavy pad on a smooth glass desk still slides. On wood or matte surfaces, the rubber locks in place. If you play competitive shooters or do fast CAD work, spend the extra few bucks on a pad with a dense rubber base.
Don’t skimp on the base if you make aggressive movements. Future you deserves a steady surface.
