Homemade citronella spray works okay for vibes, not so much for bugs.

Yes, you can make it. But don’t expect miracles.

The science is simple: citronella essential oil does repel mosquitoes, but the concentration you’d get from a homemade spray (usually a few drops in water or alcohol) is way lower than what’s in commercial repellents. The oil separates from water fast, so you have to shake it constantly, and even then the smell fades within 30 minutes. You’re basically spraying scented water with a short attention span.

If you still want to try, mix about 10-15 drops of pure citronella essential oil with 2 ounces of witch hazel or vodka (helps it mix) and 2 ounces of distilled water. Store in a dark glass spray bottle. It’ll smell nice and might buy you a few minutes outside. But if you’re in serious mosquito territory—like dusk near standing water—just buy a DEET or picaridin-based spray. They actually work.

This is one of those DIY projects that feels good but doesn’t solve the problem.
