Horizontal stacks are the best way to display a small book collection
Horizontal stacking is a smart way to declutter a small book collection because it turns books into a design element while keeping them accessible.
The key is being ruthless about which books make the cut. You’re not storing them – you’re displaying them. So pick your absolute favorites (or ones with pretty covers) and stack 3–5 flat on a floating shelf above your desk. That keeps them off the actual workspace and gives your eyes a break from the screen.
Don’t stack more than 5 unless the shelf is deep and sturdy. Taller stacks look cluttered and become a pain to pull from. Leave a few vertical books on the desk if you want, but the horizontal stack should be the anchor – it breaks up the verticality and feels more intentional.
The floating shelf needs to be within arm’s reach (not too high) so you actually grab books. If it’s a decorative-only shelf, you’re wasting space. Above a desk, aim for about 6–8 inches above the monitor. That way it feels like
