Household bleach works for pools if you do the math.
Yes. Household bleach (sodium hypochlorite) is the same active chemical as liquid pool chlorine — just weaker. Typical pool chlorine is 10–12% sodium hypochlorite. Household bleach is usually 6% or 8.25%. So you need about 1.5 to 2 times as much volume.
Do not use scented, splash-less, or “concentrated” bleach with additives like surfactants or thickeners. Those will foam and mess with your pool chemistry. Stick to plain, unscented bleach.
To figure out the right amount: if your pool chlorine calculator calls for 1 gallon of 10% chlorine, you need roughly 1.6 gallons of 6% bleach. Or just double-check the label and do the math: (desired % ÷ actual %) × volume.
It’s a fine backup or occasional solution, but buying actual pool chlorine is easier and cheaper per unit of chlorine. Bleach works in a pinch.
