How did they record the lap steel guitar on 'High Hopes' and what effects were used to create the ethereal slide sound?

David Gilmour recorded the lap steel guitar part for “High Hopes” in a single, emotional take at his Astoria boat studio. He was playing a Fender lap steel tuned to open G, running through a DigiTech Whammy pedal set to a two-octave-up interval, which gave the notes that impossible, sweeping glide.

The Whammy was used in momentary mode so he could kick it on and off mid-phrase, creating the effect of the slide leaping into the upper register before dropping back. That, combined with a subtle touch of delay and reverb from his standard rig, made the solo sound like it was bending time itself. No digital pitch correction or multi-tracking—just a pedal, a steel bar, and one long, tearful ride.
