How 'Dogs' got its nine-minute core from a 1974 tour jam, and what the stone really means

The 17-minute epic that ends Animals side one started life as a much leaner piece called “You’ve Gotta Be Crazy.” Pink Floyd played it on their French tour in early 1974, and bootlegs capture a version that clocks in around nine minutes — no extended guitar solos, no synth/piano middle section, just the vocal verses and a shorter instrumental outro. The band shelved it after that tour, then resurrected it for Animals and essentially doubled its length by inserting the long, meditative instrumental passage and the second half with the “stone” imagery.
