How 'Gimme Shelter' Filmed the Altamont Stabbing After the Camera Ran Out of Film

During the Altamont Free Concert, the Maysles brothers had two cameras rolling when the violence broke out during the Rolling Stones’ “Under My Thumb.” The on-stage camera, operated by Albert Maysles, ran out of film just as Meredith Hunter pulled a revolver and was stabbed. The camera magazine went empty, so there is no direct footage of the stabbing itself.

What saved the sequence was the audio track, which kept recording continuously, and a
