How 'Interstellar Overdrive' Was Built from Jam Sessions

The 14-minute “Interstellar Overdrive” started as a free-form jam at a 1966 all-night session, with Syd Barrett just messing around on a descending guitar riff. The band—Barrett, Roger Waters, Nick Mason, and Richard Wright—locked into that riff and let it spiral into a chaotic, experimental piece that became the longest track on The Piper at the Gates of Dawn.

They developed it live first, playing it at UFO Club shows and letting the structure shift every night. In the studio, the tape was edited from a longer take that ran nearly 20 minutes, with the middle section left open for noisy, psychedelic freak-outs. No overdubs, no safety net—just four guys riding a riff into deep space.
