How 'Interstellar Overdrive' Was Caught in One Take with the Binson Echorec

The master take of “Interstellar Overdrive” from The Piper at the Gates of Dawn was essentially a live studio performance. Producer Norman Smith had the band play the entire six-minute piece together in one go, with no overdubs, preserving the raw chaos of their club sound. He set up the mics to capture the room ambience as much as the amps themselves, letting the feedback and delay breathe naturally.

Syd Barrett’s guitar swam through a Binson Echorec, an Italian tape-echo unit that gave his lines that skipping, otherworldly decay. Unlike a spring reverb, the Echorec used a rotating magnetic drum, which could be dialed into multiple playback heads for cascading repeats. On this track, Syd kept the delay time short and the repeats just a bit unstable, turning simple riffs into a spiraling drone that anchored the jam.
