How Peter Bown Built the Cavernous Reverb on 'A Saucerful of Secrets'

Engineer Peter Bown turned Abbey Road’s echo chamber into an instrument for the title track. He routed the band’s live take through the studio’s stone-walled room, the same one used for orchestral recordings, and miked the natural decay. That’s why the song’s drone sections feel like they’re echoing inside a cathedral — because they literally were.

For the chaotic middle section, Bown didn’t rely on the chamber alone. He cut tape loops from random studio sounds and played them back at different speeds, letting the loops overlap and degrade. Combined with the reverb, it created that disorienting swirl of noise and feedback that still sounds like a spaceship losing its mind.
