How Pink Floyd Created the Cash Register and Coin Sounds on 'Money'

The sounds of cash registers, coins, and tearing paper on “Money” are real recordings, not synthesized. Roger Waters spent hours recording these effects at home, then built a tape loop that matched the song’s unusual 7/4 time signature.

To sync the loop, the tape was spliced and cut into a repeating rhythmic pattern. The loop ran through a Binson echo unit and was mixed in real time during the master recording. Every clink and ring is a physical sample, carefully sequenced by hand to create that unmistakable groove.
