How Pink Floyd Got Those Spontaneous Answers on Dark Side of the Moon — Interview by Cue Card

The speech segments on Dark Side of the Moon weren’t scripted. Pink Floyd set up a microphone in a studio, printed questions on cue cards, and held them up one at a time. The person would read the question silently, then answer aloud on mic — no rehearsal, no second takes. “When was the last time you were violent?” popped up right after “Are you afraid of dying?” so the reactions were raw and often off-guard.

They recorded roadies, technicians, band members, and even the Irish doorman Gerry O’Driscoll (he’s the one who says “I am not frightened of dying”). The whole thing was laid down on a 4-track machine, then chopped up and layered onto the album. No hidden psycho-acoustic gimmick — just people talking honestly into a mic. The only trick was the editing.
