How Pink Floyd’s Quadraphonic Sound on the 1975 Wish You Were Here Tour Pushed Beyond Earlier Experiments
Pink Floyd had been messing with quadraphonic sound since the Dark Side of the Moon tour in 1973, using a custom-built mixer that fed four channels to extra speakers around the venue. But those early attempts were more about atmosphere than precision — the band would trigger pre-recorded quad effects during songs like “On the Run,” and the mix was often a static, speaker-switching gimmick. By the Wish You Were Here tour in 1975, they wanted the quadraphonic system to feel like an active part of the performance, not just a decoration.
The biggest leap was moving from tape-based quad to a live, real-time quad mix. The band’s sound engineer, Brian Humphries, had to figure out how to pan instruments and vocals across four channels on the fly while the band played. That meant building a custom 32-channel mixer with four assignable outputs and a joystick-style panner that let Humphries “fly” sounds around the room. The challenge wasn’t just hardware — it was also the acoustics. Most arena PA systems were designed for stereo, so the quad setup required extra speaker stacks placed at odd angles, which often caused phase cancellations and dead spots unless Humphries constantly adjusted delays.
Specific headaches surfaced around vocals and transitions. During “Shine On You Crazy Diamond,” the quad effect of Gilmour’s guitar notes swirling around the hall worked beautifully in controlled soundchecks, but in a live room with audience chatter and uneven seating, the spatial illusion collapsed. And the band’s own volume onstage bled into the audience microphones used for the system’s ambient reverb, causing feedback loops. Humphries later admitted that the 1975 quad setup was “finicky as hell” — it worked only about half the nights, but when it did, the sound felt like you were inside the music rather than just hearing it.
