Record Collector’s review of The Later Years box set was surprisingly warm toward the 2019 remix of A Momentary Lapse of Reason—a record that originally felt like a David Gilmour solo project dressed in Pink Floyd packaging. The critic noted that stripping away the gated reverb and 1980s synth layers made the album sound “more like a band” for the first time, even if some of the rewritten drum tracks felt like revisionist history.

The unreleased live tracks in the box set got even higher marks, particularly the 1988 Nassau Coliseum show and the 1994 Earls Court performances. Record Collector called them “essential” for capturing the post-Waters lineup’s onstage chemistry, something the studio albums rarely managed. The box set’s sprawling 18 discs still felt like a love letter to a divided fanbase.
