How Syd Barrett’s Ghost Shaped Wish You Were Here Without the Band Intending It

The band started Wish You Were Here sessions determined not to write directly about Syd Barrett. They were tired of being defined by his absence and wanted to move forward. So the early writing focused on the music industry’s cynicism (“Have a Cigar”) and personal isolation.

But Syd kept showing up anyway. The opening notes of “Shine On You Crazy Diamond” are a slow, mournful theme they’d jammed on before—Waters later said it felt like “the Syd thing” without anyone saying his name. The moment they started playing it, the song became about him, consciously or not. By the time they recorded the album, the famous visit from an overweight, bald Syd at Abbey Road essentially forced them to acknowledge his presence.

The title track “Wish You Were Here” was written last, partly to thread a more universal theme of loss through the album. Waters has said they deliberately avoided making the whole record “a Syd album
