How the Exile on Main St. cover collage was built from a flea market poster

The cover of Exile on Main St. wasn’t a single photograph or a painting—it was a collage stitched together from two very different sources. Designer John Van Hamersveld bought an old carnival freak show poster at a flea market, a garish advertisement for “The World of Mirth” sideshow. He then layered a black-and-white photo of the Stones taken by Norman Seeff on top of that poster, positioning the band directly in the middle of the chaos.

The result feels like a found object—a ripped, overprinted advertisement from some forgotten fairground. The poster itself featured a strongman
