How the Rolling Stones' 1990 Urban Jungle Tour Setlist Shifted from the Steel Wheels Tour

The Urban Jungle tour was essentially the Rolling Stones hitting the same stadiums as the 1989 Steel Wheels tour, but they trimmed the fat and tightened the focus. Steel Wheels shows often ran past two and a half hours with deep cuts like “2000 Light Years from Home” and “Miss You” in the encore rotation. Urban Jungle cut the average setlist by about five songs, dropped the lengthy solo spots, and killed the opening act entirely — no warm-up band, just the Stones hitting the stage with “Start Me Up.”

The two biggest adds were “Street Fighting Man” and “Ruby Tuesday,” both becoming nightly fixtures for the first time since the 1970s. “Street Fighting Man” hadn’t been played regularly since the Some Girls tour in ‘78, and “Ruby Tuesday” hadn’t been a setlist staple since the mid-60s. The shorter opening set meant they jumped straight into the big hits, leaving less room for the blues covers and B-side experiments that padded the Steel Wheels shows. The crowd got more gasoline, less filler.
