The band leaned into the obvious headline — their first original album since 2005’s A Bigger Bang — but never let it become a eulogy. At the 2023 press conference hosted by Jimmy Fallon, Mick Jagger and Keith Richards were directly asked if this could be their last album. Jagger dodged with a grin: “It’s the best album we’ve done in a long time.” Richards added that “we wouldn’t put something out just to say goodbye.”

They intentionally framed the album as a return to form, not a final statement. The title Hackney Diamonds — London slang for broken glass after a burglary, which happened at Jagger
