Humidity kills hydrophobic mousepad coatings faster.

Yes.

Hydrophobic coatings on mousepads are usually based on siloxanes or fluoropolymers. Humidity accelerates the breakdown of these molecules — water vapor literally attacks the chemical bonds. In dry climates, the coating lasts noticeably longer because there’s less moisture to trigger hydrolysis. In a humid environment (think >60% RH year-round), you’ll probably see the water beading effect start to fade in half the time.

Most mousepads with these coatings aren’t designed for tropical conditions anyway. If you live somewhere humid, you might be better off with a Cordura or polyester pad that doesn’t rely on a fancy coating. Or just accept you’ll replace the pad more often.

That coating is a nice-to-have, not a forever feature.
