The adhesive layer is usually a pressure-sensitive acrylic or similar compound. In high humidity, the rubber base absorbs moisture, swells slightly, and the bond between rubber and adhesive weakens. Over a few months, you’ll notice the edges curling, the pad shifting on your desk, or the whole thing bubbling.

Hard mousepads with a rubber backing are also vulnerable — the rubber itself can get tacky or start to break down if the room is consistently damp (think >70% humidity). Once that happens, there’s no fixing it.

If you live somewhere humid or store the pad in a basement, keep it in a dry drawer when not in use, or throw a silica gel packet nearby. Your mousepad is not expensive, but it’s annoying to replace every six months.
