(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction: The Rolling Stones' First U.S. No. 1

The Rolling Stones’ first American No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 came in the summer of 1965 with “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction.” The song topped the chart on July 10, 1965 and stayed there for four weeks, cementing the band’s crossover from British R&B revivalists to global rock stars.

The track was famously built around Keith Richards’ fuzzed-out three-note guitar riff, which he dreamt up in a Florida motel room and originally thought was just a scratch idea. Mick Jagger wrote the lyrics about commercialism and sexual frustration, and the band recorded it in a single afternoon at RCA Studios in Hollywood. It became not only their first U.S. No. 1 but also their signature song and an anthem of mid-60s rebellion.
