Ice coolers and thermoelectric coolers are totally different things.

A regular cooler is basically an insulated box that keeps ice from melting fast. A thermoelectric cooler is an electric device that actively pumps heat away using the Peltier effect.

Most people mean the cheap picnic chest when they say “cooler.” That one does nothing except slow down the inevitable — you put ice in, and it melts. A thermoelectric cooler, on the other hand, plugs into power (usually 12V) and can chill items down below ambient temperature without ice. No melting mess, but it’s a lot weaker.

Here’s the honest tradeoff: thermoelectric coolers are great for keeping a few drinks cold for a road trip, but they’ll never get as cold as an ice chest, and they don’t work well when the outside temperature is high. Ice chests are dumb but reliable. Thermoelectric units are smarter but picky about their power draw and can drain your car battery.

If you’re comparing them for camping or tailgating, ask yourself how long you need to keep food cold and whether you have a reliable power source. Ice wins for serious cooling. Thermoelectric wins for convenience.
