Ice packs beat clever packing every time
Ice packs are the whole trick to packing a lunch for a four-hour commute, and the rest is just picking food that doesn’t punish you for not having a fridge.
You don’t need a fancy lunch system. You need an insulated bag (even a $10 cooler sack works) and a gel ice pack, or just a frozen water bottle. It’ll still be cold by the time you eat. That’s the entire secret. Everything else is food selection.
Avoid anything mayo-based, soft cheese, raw meat, or cut veggies that go slimy. Pack hard cheese, cured meat, whole fruit with a peel, nuts, and sandwiches on sturdy bread with mustard or butter instead of mayo. Grain salads with vinegar dressing do great. So do pickles, olives, and hummus with something to dip.
And the sneaky hack: a thermos. Hot soup or curry stays above 140°F for hours, which is food-safe and honestly a better train lunch than a desk sandwich anyway.
Plan for heat and moisture, and you’ll never worry about a fridge again.
