Increase Difficulty by Adding Constraints
When your resolution gets too easy, the fix is usually to add constraints, not more work.
Easy becomes boring, which is almost as dangerous as burnout — it makes you quit just as fast. But doubling down and trying to do more of the same thing is how you crash. Instead, change the rules of the game. If you’re nailing your 10k steps every day, try doing them in a one-hour block. If you’ve got your morning writing habit down, write with a timer set to half your usual time. Constraint forces new engagement without piling on volume.
Burnout comes from relentless increase. Constraint creates tension without exhaustion. You keep the same output, but raise the quality or difficulty through boundaries. It’s like switching from free weights to kettlebells — same motion, different demand.
Boredom is a signal to redesign, not just push harder.
