Insulated jar wins unless you're reheating
The insulated food jar is the better choice for keeping hot food hot all day, but the electric lunch box is the one you want if you need to reheat something that started cold.
A wide-mouth insulated jar works like a Thermos. You preheat it with boiling water, fill it with piping-hot food, and close it. No power, no cords, no remembering to plug it in. Good ones hold heat for 6–8 hours. You’re basically paying for the vacuum insulation.
The electric lunch box is more like a tiny slow cooker. It has a heating element you plug into a wall outlet (or car adapter) about 20–40 minutes before you want to eat. It wil heat up food from the fridge or room temperature. The catch is you need access to an outlet at mealtime, and the box is bulkier because of the electrical bits.
So think about your day. If you’re packing lunch in the morning and eating at noon, you want the jar — it’s fire-and-forget. If you’re bringing leftovers from the fridge or you don’t want to commit to a hot lunch until you’re ready to eat, the electric box is more flexible. Just don’t expect the electric one to keep things hot after you unplug it; it won’t.
Future-you will appreciate the one that matches your routine, not the one that sounds cool in the store.
