Ionization won't replace your light box
Negative air ionization is not a proven alternative to light therapy for seasonal affective disorder, though it might help a subset of people.
Here’s the deal. Light therapy is the gold standard for SAD — it works by mimicking natural sunlight to shift your circadian rhythm and boost serotonin. The research is solid, and it’s been used for decades. Negative air ionization, on the other hand, has a much thinner evidence base. A few small studies showed some benefit for winter depression, but results are inconsistent and the mechanism isn’t clear. It’s not even obvious if ions affect mood directly or just make the air feel fresher.
I think ionization could be a decent
