Yes, it can absolutely blow your hat off and knock your phone out of your hand. Especially on exposed beaches, cliffs, or during trade wind season.

Hawaii, the Caribbean, the Canaries—most tropical islands get consistent trade winds. That means steady 15–25 mph breezes with stronger gusts, especially in the afternoon. If you’re walking along a ridge trail or standing on a pier, a sudden gust can catch you off guard. I’ve seen sunglasses fly and phones hit the rocks.

The worst spots are usually the windward (east) sides of islands and any high, open point. Leeward (west) sides are much calmer. So if you’re worried about your stuff, keep it zipped up, use a lanyard on your phone, and wear a hat with a chin strap or just accept you’ll be chasing it.

The trade winds are part of the charm—they keep the humidity down and the bugs away. But they don’t care about your favorite cap.
