Usually $100–$300, if you can find someone willing to do it at all. Most repair shops won’t touch a BGA reball unless it’s a known-good chip swap, and even then, it’s not a guaranteed win.

The labor is the expensive part. Reballing a RAM chip means desoldering the old one, cleaning pads, applying new solder balls, and reflowing the new chip. That’s a couple hours of skilled work, plus the risk of killing the board. Shops that do this charge by the hour or by the job — expect $80–$150/hour, and a typical job runs 1–2 hours. Then add the cost of the higher-capacity chips themselves, which can be $20–$60 each depending on specs.

But here’s the real issue: laptop motherboards aren’t designed for RAM upgrades via reballing. The BIOS and memory controller often limit what capacities work, so even if you solder on 16GB chips, the board might only see 8GB or not boot. You’re paying for a possible failure. Most shops will warn you upfront that it’s a gamble.

If you need more RAM, buy a laptop with the capacity you want from the start, or find one with socketed SO-DIMMs. Reballing is a last-ditch hack for machines where the original RAM is dead, not a reliable upgrade path.
