Jake Holmes is right: Led Zeppelin's "Dazed and Confused" is a rip-off.
Jake Holmes. He wrote and recorded the song in 1967, two years before Led Zeppelin released their version. Jimi Page saw Holmes perform it live in New York, then promptly took the arrangement, lyrics, and structure without credit or payment.
Holmes didn’t sue for decades—he only filed a copyright lawsuit in 2010. The case went back and forth, and eventually settled in 2012 (terms undisclosed). So officially, Zeppelin got away with it for a long time, and even after the settlement, Page’s name stays on the original album credits.
Holmes is not a household name, but he’s the guy who wrote the song. If you’ve heard the Zeppelin version, you’ve basically heard his, just louder and heavier.
