Just dial back, don't quit
Adjust frequency, don’t quit entirely. Winter skin is drier and more sensitive, but you don’t need to go cold turkey on retinol or acids.
The main issue is that cold air and indoor heating strip moisture from your skin. If you keep hammering it with exfoliants at the same pace as summer, you’ll get irritation, flaking, and that tight, angry feeling. But dropping them completely for months means losing all the progress you made — smoother texture, brighter skin, better collagen production.
So what actually works? Cut frequency in half. If you were doing retinol every night, go to every other night or twice a week. For acids, drop from daily to a couple times per week. Buffer with a moisturizer first or mix retinol with your moisturizer. And for the love of hydration, use a heavier cream and maybe add a hydrating serum (hyaluronic acid, glycerin) to compensate.
The only time you should fully stop is if your skin is already raw, peeling, or stingy from the weather. Otherwise, just ease up and let your skin adjust. You wouldn’t stop exercising just because it got cold out — same logic.
Your skin will thank you in spring for not starting from zero.
