Just get a stainless steel lunch box

Stainless steel is the best lunch box material for cutting plastic waste, and it’s not close.

Glass lasts forever too, but nobody wants to haul a glass casserole dish to the office, and it will eventually break. The “bamboo fiber” containers that look eco-friendly are mostly bound with melamine resin, which is plastic in disguise. Stainless is the sweet spot: light enough to carry, nearly indestructible, and it’ll outlive you.

Look for a stainless bento like Planet Box or LunchBots if you want compartments, or a plain stainless container if you just need a main dish. Most come with plastic or silicone lids, which is fine — one lid is a trivial amount of plastic compared to a disposable container every single day. If you want to skip plastic entirely, add a silicone Stasher bag for snacks and a beeswax wrap for sandwiches.

Don’t overthink it. The stainless container you’ll actually use beats the perfect eco solution you’ll abandon by week two.
