No. Not really. Citronella is not safe to use around pets—especially cats.

Cats are particularly sensitive. Citronella oil can cause respiratory issues, skin irritation, and if ingested (which cats might do grooming it off their fur), it can lead to vomiting, drooling, and even liver damage. Don’t put citronella candles, sprays, or plants near cats.

Dogs are a little more tolerant, but not by much. Citronella collars (used for anti-bark) are generally considered low-risk because the spray is just a puff of scent, not concentrated oil. But if a dog chews on a citronella candle or gets concentrated oil on its skin, you’re looking at stomach upset, skin irritation, or worse. I wouldn’t risk it.

Essentially, if you’re trying to repel mosquitoes, skip citronella and go with pet-safe alternatives like picaridin or permethrin (for dogs only—permethrin kills cats). Or just use a fan.

Your pet’s vet bill will cost more than any citronella candle you might lose.
