Keep extension cords for electronics under 25 feet.

Voltage drop isn’t a myth, and sensitive electronics like computers, audio gear, or medical devices can start acting flaky or even get damaged if the voltage dips too low.

The math: A 50-foot, 16-gauge extension cord at 10 amps loses about 10% voltage. Most power supplies are specced for ±10%, but you’re running on the ragged edge. Brownouts cause weird behavior—random restarts, dim displays, fried power bricks. Go with a shorter, heavier cord: 25 feet or less with at least 14-gauge wire for anything over 5 amps.

If you absolutely need 50+ feet, step up to 12-gauge and plug in only one high-power device. Otherwise, move the device closer. Extension cords are for temporary reach, not fixed installations.
