Keep your art kit small and modular

The best portable art kit for school is small, modular, and fits in a pencil case.

Most people overpack. They bring a full marker set, a giant sketchbook, a tin of 80 colored pencils, and then never carry it anywhere. A portable kit should be something you can grab without thinking. If it doesn’t fit in a standard zipper pouch, it’s not portable.

Start with a sturdy pencil case or a small tin. Then pick one medium to focus on: a mechanical pencil and eraser are the foundation, plus a fine-liner and a few pigment pens. If you want color, one small set of markers or a 12-pack of colored pencils is enough. For painting, a waterbrush and a tiny palette with dried watercolors work better than tubes — no leaks, no mess
