Lap swimmers like it cooler than you think.

78–82°F for laps, 84–88°F for hanging out. If you’re swimming laps, anything above 82°F feels like soup — your energy drains fast, and you overheat. Leisure or kids? Go warmer. 86°F is bath water for most adults, and that’s fine for floating around or water volleyball.

The real fight is the middle: 83–85°F where nobody’s happy. Lap swimmers slow down, loungers still feel a chill. Pick a lane — literally.

If you share a pool with mixed goals, keep it at 82°F. That’s the compromise that annoys everyone equally.
