Leak-proof and eco-friendly means stainless steel with a silicone seal

Stainless steel is the real eco-friendly option, but it’s not leak-proof on its own. You need a lid with a silicone gasket, or you’ll end up with dressing in your backpack.

The two brands that actually nail this are U-Konserve and ECOlunchbox. U-Konserve’s stainless containers have screw-on or snap lids with silicone rings, and I’ve thrown soups and yogurt in them without a spill. ECOlunchbox sells similar metal tins with seal-tight lids, and they’re also kid-friendly. If you want compartments, PlanetBox’s Rover is stainless and comes with leak-proof mini dippers for wet stuff like hummus or applesauce.

Glass like Pyrex works too, but it’s heavy and breakable. Silicone Stasher bags are great backups for sandwiches and snacks, but not great for carrying a full meal.

The key is checking that the lid has a rubber or silicone seal. If it’s just bare metal on metal, it’s only dry-food safe. Also, skip anything with plastic liners — some “eco” stainless boxes have plastic inside, which defeats the point.

One last thing: hand wash the gaskets. They warp in the dishwasher, and then nothing is leak-proof. Worth the extra minute.
