Leak-proof soup carriers are food jars, not lunch boxes

The best way to carry soup, yogurt, or a smoothie without a separate container is a wide-mouth food jar or a latch-sealed container like Rubbermaid Brilliance. Regular lunch boxes and clamshells aren’t built for liquids, and “leak-resistant” marketing is doing a lot of heavy lifting.

For hot stuff — soup, chili, curry — get an insulated food jar. Thermos, Stanley, and Hydro Flask all make wide-mouth versions that seal properly, keep food hot until noon, and double as a bowl so you skip the extra Tupperware. I’d take any of those over a fancy subdivided lunch box for this.

For cold stuff — yogurt, chia pudding, thick smoothies — Rubbermaid Brilliance is the one. The double latches and silicone gasket make it genuinely turn-it-upside-down leak-proof, it’s microwave and dishwasher safe, and it’s cheap. I’ve thrown one in a backpack sideways with a smoothie inside and came out clean. Glass containers with the clip-lock lids tend to leak at the gasket, so don’t fall for the nicer-looking option.

If you’re drinking your smoothie rather than spooning it, skip all of this and just use an insulated bottle with a straw lid. The food jar is for spoonable stuff.

The seal is everything. Buy the vessel built for liquid and your bag stays dry.
