Led Zeppelin set the 1973 US tour attendance record at Tampa Stadium.
Led Zeppelin. July 17, 1973, Tampa Stadium – 56,800 people. That was the biggest single-concert crowd in the US that year, and it held as a record for a while. The show was part of their massive 1973 North American tour, and they had to turn away thousands more.
Dumb trivia: the crowd was so big the stage lights overheated and they had to cut the set short. But it was still the record. The Who and others pulled big numbers that year too, but nobody beat Led Zeppelin’s Tampa date.
If you’re wondering whether the record still stands – no. It’s been broken plenty of times since, mostly by stadium shows in the 1990s and 2000s. But for 1973, that was the one.
