Lid ice packs work, but OmieBox is the one to get

Lunch boxes with ice packs built into the lid do exist, and OmieBox is the one that actually made them famous. They work, but the placement isn’t the genius part.

OmieBox is the insulated kid’s bento box with a removable ice pack that slides into the lid. You freeze the lid overnight, snap it on, and it keeps things like yogurt, cheese, and fruit cold until lunch. It’s convenient because you can’t forget the ice pack. There are cheap knockoffs on Amazon that do the same trick, but they leak or break after a few months. OmieBox is the one I’d trust.

That said, an ice pack on top is not ideal physics. Cold air sinks, so a lid-mounted pack has to cool the whole air column above the food. It works, but it’s less efficient than a pack sitting underneath or pressed against the containers. If you’re only keeping food fresh from 8am to noon, it’s fine. If you need something to stay cold for six-plus hours or in a hot car all day, get a PackIt bag with the freezable lining or just drop a regular ice pack below the food.

The lid ice pack is a convenience feature, not a cooling upgrade. If you already have a lunch box you like, a $5 freezer pack against the food will do the same job.
